SOMETHING TO READ….

If you are looking for some good reading material you may be interested in Joanna’s question below.

Hi Jaina,

I hope you are well.

Can you recommend any good yoga books or websites to help me with my yoga practice?

I would particularly like good explanations for the poses as well as the benefits and effects of the poses.

Thanks,

Joanna

Hi Joanna,

Thanks for your inquiry.

A really helpful book which I often refer to is Asana, Prananyama, Mudra and Bandha by Swami Satyananda Saraswati (Bihar School of Yoga). It has great in depth explanations of each pose with some good diagrams too. Its also explains the benefits and contra-indications of each yoga pose. It also covers breathing, subtle movements and gestures (mudras) and energetic locks (bandhas). I would advise you cover these under the guidance of an experienced yoga teacher.

I would also really recommend taking a look at the Yoga Journal website www.yogajournal.com. This is a great resource for your yoga practice. There are a range of videos, blog posts and other information from yoga teachers all around the world.

Lastly I would also use Neil Patel’s website www.chikri.com. I did my yoga teacher training with Chi Kri and Neil’s interpretation on yoga and it’s philosophy is logical and understandable.

These are just some recommendations as there are hundreds of other books and websites to use. However while you are reading about yoga remember to be intuitive and pick up on things which resonate with you. There are so many different interpretations of yoga that it is important you go with what you feel is right, relevant and important.

Happy reading!

Jaina
