STARTING A HOME YOGA PRACTICE

The public yoga classes in Bushey, Northwood and Radlett will be closed from Monday 12th August 2013 to Sunday 8th September 2013. Therefore this is a great time to start a home yoga practice.

If you can spare one hour once a week, twice a week or everyday you will feel great benefits within your body and mind! I would recommend splitting the hour into 15 minutes of posture practice, 15 minutes of breathing, 15 minutes of meditation and 15 minutes of relaxation. This is best practiced on an empty stomach first thing in the morning or last thing at night before you go to sleep.

To begin your practice find a quiet space in your house where you will not be disturbed. Roll out your yoga mat and work through postures which you are familiar with such as child pose, cat, downward facing dog, plank pose and upward facing dog. Allow yourself to work intuitively and move into poses which you feel to do and which you enjoy doing!

Alternatively if you would like to practice a sequence please download the Sun Salutation Sun Salutation with Jaina. Do a few rounds of this sequence before proceeding into your 15 minutes of breathing exercises. Follow this with meditation using a specific technique or breath awareness. For those of you who have been to my meditation workshop you can use the many meditation techniques we worked on in the workshop.

Lastly practice 15 minutes of relaxation in Shavasana (Corpse pose). Allow your mind to pass through each part of your body relaxing all the muscles and joints. A home practice does require a certain level of motivation and discipline and these are life lessons within themselves. However if you are already managing to get to my classes at least once a week I’m sure you will have no problem practicing at home! Good luck and let me know how you are getting on
